Scottish Universities Golfing Society
London University GS - Royal St Georges GC - Friday 21 February 2025
February saw SUGS return to Sandwich for our annual fixture against our friends from LUGS. Ahead of the match, plenty of players from both sides convened for informal golf and lunch on the Thursday afternoon, before the usual pre-match supper hosted this year in The Toll Bridge restaurant in Sandwich. LUGS did their usual research on the bottom-right corner of the wine list, pairings were announced and post-dinner digestifs were enjoyed particularly enthusiastically by Kershaws (x2) and Calders (x2.)
Friday 21st February was subsequently match day, where we returned to a mild but blustery Royal St George's presented in excellent condition for the time of year. All morning matches commenced from the 10th tee. Out first, the experienced SUGS pairing of Reid and Kernaghan took down Jackson and Porky Kershaw from LUGS on the final hole before SUGS followed up with a come from behind victory in match 2 inspired by some sublime Simpson iron play. Matches 3 and 4 were shared equally before LUGS snuck victory in a close match in game 5, despite an impressive holed 30 yard bunker shot by Holt on the 7th to keep the match alive. In the casual Seniors morning match, 18 holes were played by Falconer/N Kershaw vs S Farmer/Cameron with McCluskey and Morrison agreeing to a lesser 11 holes against Yeandle and Smith to ensure they would be at the front of the queue for the lunchtime Pouilly Fuisse.
With all matches off the 1st tee in the afternoon, Holt and Jackson ran into an early lead for LUGS in match 1 which they never relented on before a blue wave of points in matches 2-5 got SUGS to the magic number to reclaim The Falconer Ball. In the competitive afternoon Seniors matches, the spoils were shared equally giving a final scoreline of LUGS 4 - 8 SUGS.
After conclusion of play, we convened back in the Royal St George's temporary marquee currently in place for ongoing clubhouse refurbishments. A wonderful match dinner of scallops and beef wellington was enjoyed followed by a cheeseboard washed down with ample amounts of port and kummel. LUGS Match Captain, John Dennis, spoke for the hosts with SUGS Captain, David Simpson, responding. The spotlight then passed to match veterans Falconer and Cameron who fondly regaled stories of Dr Alastair Wells who was a friend to many in this match who sadly passed away last year before Stuart Farmer wrapped up the entertainment.
Overall, another thoroughly enjoyable match in great company with Royal St George's a wonderful venue on and off the course which we are privileged to enjoy. We look forward already to the fixture in 2026 and the opportunity to retain the Falconer Ball.

Spring Meeting - Prestwick GC - Sunday 13 April 2025
A strong field of 30 SUGS were treated to a fresh Spring Day at Prestwick Golf Club for our annual Spring Meeting. Conditions were tough, with a serious gusting wind to keep players on their toes.
Unsurprisingly the SUGS were not deterred, and quality golf was on display. Captain David Simpson shot 71 to win the Baird Purdie Trophy, pipping Andrew Cunningham to the title. After winning the Boase Putter in October, the SUGS Captain is now the reigning champion of the society’s two most coveted scratch prizes – an impressive feat.
Harry Bathurst took home the Thomson Quaich, with a score of 73 less 4 for a nett 69. Al Pugh came an extremely close second, missing out on countback.
Golf was followed by lunch in Prestwick’s Big Room with the presentation of trophies. Our Captain thanked David Bennet and his staff for the warmest of welcomes and a few hardy souls headed out for more golf after lunch.
Baird Purdie Trophy (Scratch)
Winner: David Simpson – 71
Runner Up: Andrew Cunningham – 72
Thomson Quaich (Handicap)
Winner: Harry Bathurst – Net 69 (won on countback)
Runner Up: Alistair Pugh – Net 69
Perthshire Pinehurst - Comrie - Sunday 25 May 2025
Unfortunately the fantastic spring weather experienced for most of May did not include the 25th! A few short showers did put a little dampener on the day, but were soon forgotten in the clubhouse after golf where all present (including honorary 4 legged SUGS - Polly Greenshields and Ruby Biggart) enjoyed a post match BBQ. To cap the day off, President Watt gave a brief rendition of "The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen" as a tribute to his team's win over Celtic in the Scottish Cup the previous day! Another enjoyable day.

Midlothian County Ladies Golf Association - Gullane No 2 & 3 - Friday 30 May 2025
Keen interest from both sides resulted in a 10-a-side match for the first time in several years, with play over Gullane No 2 and No 3 to bring the finishing times closer together. Sadly from the SUGS perspective this change did not result in a win, and MCLGA emerged comfortable winners, with McLeish and Hammond

Tantallon GC - North Berwick West Links - Saturday 14 June 2025
A young SUGS team overcame the frailties of the ScotRail infrastructure to deliver a 4.5-0.5 victory over Tantallon GC.
In our Society's Oldest fixture, 7 of the 10 strong team were left stranded on Platform 7 at Waverley, as the Scottish summer emptied itself in one foul downpour on the rail system. A smartly ordered taxi delivered the squad 15 minutes before the first tee time. A very quick lunch and no time to loosen the swings apparently worked wonders....
The weather cleared in time for golf and the SUGS came out firing, with the overall result seemingly never under threat. The course was in fine order after the recent Scottish Men's Open, and once again we realised how fortunate we are to play at such wonderful venues.
After golf, we enjoyed the traditional Tantallon Salad of pie, beans and chips, followed by the most decadent of chocolate torte. The Tantallon members were wonderful company as always, with all SUGS agreeing it was another fantastic day at the storied West Links. SUGS Vice Captain David Giffin gratefully reclaimed the match trophy from Tantallon Capt Duncan Forbes, a solid bounce back from last year's defeat.

Young v Wise - Royal Burgess - Sunday 24 August 2025
Sunday 24th August saw the inaugural SUGS Young v Wise Match. In a rare change of pace for SUGS, the match was played on a hot summer’s day at a parkland course – Royal Burgess.
I suggested the Young v Wise match as a method of integrating the society; allowing for fresh-faced new members to get to know the established gentlemen of SUGS at an internal event, rather than at a match where they’re meant to be meeting their opponent! Interest in the event was well received, but the real difficulty came in choosing the teams. Two precedents were set in this process:
-
The current Captain is to choose the Wise team.
-
The cut-off for the “Young” classification is 35 years old.
Several members protested that they were neither young nor wise, however the day was still well attended with 27 SUGS members; 12 Young, 12 Wise and 3 past Captains ready to enjoy the lunch and observe the spectacle. While the spectacle
could refer to the golfing talent within the Wise team, it may also refer to the ability of the Wise gentleman to ensure the wine glasses of the Young team were well-filled in advance of their first tee shot.
Fourball Results ("Young" names first)
1) Gregor Miller & Lewis Govenlock v Drew McCrone & Mark Kernaghan
I felt like I pulled out a Captain’s performance for this match; putts were dropping at a surprising rate. Sadly, my opponents were sent out with a mission to put a point on the board and did not disappoint. A match with swings both ways, it was thoroughly enjoyed. Congratulations to my opponents and thank you for an excellent afternoon.
2) Lee Coulter & Callum Connacher v Ewan Cameron & Kenny McKay
Despite Mr Cameron’s best attempt to “hydrate” his opponents during lunch, Vice Captain of the Young Team Lee Coulter was full of praise for his partner after this match. Mr Connacher lived up to expectations and provided his regular flurry of
birdies at the end of this match to gain a point for the Young team.
3) Daniel McKiddie & Stefan Hindmarsh v David Simpson & Richard Muckart
Wise Captain David Simpson looked at the Young team sheet in advance of the match and was more than happy to take on the pair that stretched the definition of “Young”. With a mix of handicaps in the group, the Young gents were more than
happy with the suggestion of a scratch match where their 4-handicaps would balance against David’s +1 and Richard’s teen handicap. They should not have been happy with the suggestion. Dr. Hindmarsh noted that David “put on a clinic” and
quickly dispatched them.
4) Ross Finlay & John Bisset v Sandy Reid & Sandy Philips
The real headline from this match was that Sandy Reid nearly ended up playing for the Young Team. A simple administrative error with a mix up between Sandy Reid and Alexander Reid nearly left Sandy handing back his bus pass and teeing it up for the Young side. Sadly, some protests led to the deadly pairing of the two Sandys picking up a point for the Wise.
5) Martin Friel & Robert McNutt v Ian Kerr & Mike Reid
My favourite thing about Royal Burgess is the placement of the halfway house; easily accessible from the 9 th , 12 th and 16 th . This was not the case when I met Mr. McNutt after I finished the 12 th and he mentioned he was 4 down through 9 and it was not likely to improve. Point to the Wise.
6) James Cameron & Steven Sinclair v Gordon Simmonds & Ross Brydon
We were very grateful that Ross Brydon stood in to play for the Wise team at the last minute. Even more grateful as he would usually be classed as Young; perhaps this is why our final pairing managed a half point. We had a man on the inside.
A final score of 4½ - 1½ in favour of the Wise. From all reports the match was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we’ll be looking to continue the fixture annually. I’d welcome all to sign up, especially new members who may have more success than
those representing the Young team this year.

Gullane GC - Gullane No 1 - Sunday 7 September 2025
First three matches won and last two lost. Weather was breezy but warm. Luncheon beforehand was excellent as always with most plumping for the Sunday roast beef. Some very good players on show on both sides led to a very competitive and close match with a number of SUGS playing for Gullane with ex captain Ewan Cameron leading the charge for the home side.
In the end SUGS sealed the narrowest of wins, and Match Captain Phil Pritchett was presented with the "Gullane Quaich" by the GGC Vice Captain, Campbell Evans.

Stirling University – Castle Stuart GC - Saturday 18 October 2025
Cabot Highlands (Castle Stuart) welcomed both Stirling and SUGS on 18th October, the journey was well worth it as the sun shone, and wind abated leading to perfect conditions and no excuses for any errant shots…
The Stirling team was made up of players from their 2nd and 3rd team, however all players were of scratch or better showing the incredible depth the university has. SUGS members were very thankful for the handicap system!
The match format was fourball better ball with handicaps applied. The result ended in a 2-2 draw; a repeat of the 2024 fixture. An additional highlight of the day was a hole in one for Stephen Pears on his second SUGS outing!

Autumn Meeting - Gullane No 1 & 2 - Saturday 25 October 2025
President Nigel Watt saw the Boase players off the first tee of No. 2 in challenging conditions. As Sandy Reid put it, “Proper East Lothian golfing day, should separate the wheat from the chaff!” This assessment proved correct. The chaff struggled while past winners of the Boase putter battled it out for the title. David Simpson defended his title valiantly, posting 65 points and finishing second. It was, however, Daniel Forbes who emerged as the victor, with 70 points over the two rounds.
An excellent meal in the magnificent surroundings of the Long Room in the New Club rounded off a very enjoyable day. On your behalf we will be writing to the New Club expressing our appreciation for their hospitality.
Results
Daniel Forbes won the Norman Boase Putter with a combined 70 Stableford points (scratch) over Gullane no.2 and no.1. David Simpson finished second on 65 points.
Andrew Jessop won the RS Sloan Trophy with an excellent 37 points (scratch) over Gullane no.1, with David Greenshields 2nd on 32 points.
Gregor Miller won the CR Duncan Leeds Trophy with 37 points (nett). Keith McCall posted 33 points to finish second.
Phil Pritchett won the Seniors Salver with 34 points (nett), pipping Mike Reid, who also had 34 points, but lost on countback.
Congratulations to the winners and all of those who took part.

Finlay Paterson (EUGC Captain) presents David Giffin (SUGS Captain) with the Roy Thompson Trophy
Dundee University - Panmure GC - Sunday 23 November 2025
After a brief exodus, it was great to see the match against Dundee University return to Panmure. Thanks go to match manager David Murray for making this happen. Unfortunately, after straining his lower back in the lead up to the fixture David was unable to lead the side out. A Dundee student also pulled out, setting up a classical 7-a-side affair.
Heavy rain thankfully subsided as the first group teed off, with dry conditions enjoyed by all for most of the round. Alex Room, off top, delivered the goods. Never in doubt! SUGS next two pairs enjoyed tight matches but were unable to deliver a point. It was left to Ross Finlay and SUGS debutant John Lomas to salvage a point for the draw, and they did just that. After the round, a hearty lunch was enjoyed by both sides in the clubhouse by the fire. A fitting finish to a great day out.
