Heriot Watt University - Gullane 2 - 21 February 2010

Despite some concern due to overnight frost, the match was duly played over Gullane 2. The students arrived with 8 instead of the expected 10, so Reekie and Govenlock had a game ahead of the main match - DR emerging victorious!

The pace of golf proved "slow" from certain participants, and there were further delays as custody of the key to the Heriot Watt minibus (which contained the students' change of atire for lunch!) was in Match 4. The Gullane clubhouse was very busy, and rumour has it all were too late to have any pudding! Pudding aside, the match was good fun :)

The match sheet went AWOL during the course of the day, but the results (minus the names of the students) are as follows -

Results from Gullane (SUGS names first)
1) Graeme Belch & Nicky Gold halved
2) Craig Murison & Kenny McKay halved
3) Martin Todd & Dougie Hunter lost by 1 hole
4) Dave Greenshields & Duncan Hamilton won by 2 and 1

Result: SUGS 2 - 2 Heriot Watt University

St Andrew University - St Andrews (New & Old) – 6 March 2010

St Andrews provided a strong side this year, with around 8 first team players. As usual match organiser Nigel Watt was presented some logistical challenges to get everyone off in time for the morning foursomes. The smell around the 1st tee was more brewery rather than sea air, but the students showed little side effects, and raced into a 5-1 lunchtime lead. This was a repeat of the 2009 match; the students had obviously decided "if it ain't broke don't fix it" with regard to their match preparations. Perhaps SUGS may need to adopt a similar approach in 2011! Lunch was taken in the R&A, and although SUGS fared slightly better in the afternoon (click here for photos), it was not enough to prevent a comfortable victory for the undergraduates.

Strathclyde University - Western Gailes - 7 March 2010

Another great win for the SUGS against Strathclyde at Western Gailes today - the sun shone, hardly a breath of wind, fantastic conditions and the SUGS overwhelmed the opposition to win 3-1. Opening match of Captain McLeary and myself won a great match 1 up (helped by a winning birdie from the Captain on the 18th). In match 2, Dougie Hunter and Stephen Carruthers gave a dog license (7 & 6 for those of you not old enough to remember) to their opponents. Andy Biggart and Gregor Munro did not fare as well losing 3 & 2 - they came up against stiff opposition shooting 8 birdies in 12 holes. In the last match, Murray Stewart and Duncan Hamilton won a close match 1 up to seal the victory for SUGS.

London University GS - Muirfield - 12 March 2010

This year's match returned to Muirfield, and with the inclusion of a number of low handicap SUGS, the Hon Sec had (allegedly) stated his intention was to improve on the 5-1 halftime lead achieved in 2009. Conditions were excellent - the course was great shape, the rough had been cut back, and somewhat miraculously the sun was shining too, with only light winds to contend with. Some of the LUGS had been on a training trip (on and off the course) at St Andrews earlier in the week, and in the process had recruited Richard George as a late stand-in to replace Doc Wells who had been recalled back to London.
The SUGS batting order was top loaded, and resulted in 3 wins out of 3 for the first games, before Lloyd and George broke the run of play in match 4 to gain the first point for LUGS, thanks to an excellent display of pitching and putting. Match 5 got off to an unpromising start for the SUGS - Captain McLeary's opening teeshot was definitely "left" and never seen again, and the Hon Sec hit "one of those shots we don't mention" on the 3rd, but after that blip they recovered well to record a comfortable win. With the strong pairing of Maurrice and Smith in Match 6, LUGS gained another precious point, and went into lunch 2 points adrift - an improvement on 2009 but still leaving some work to be done.

The afternoon matches proved a challenge for SUGS - Jessop and Wallace were on the receiving end of some inspired golf from Young and Dennis, but managed to hold their own and hang on for a well deserved half. The crucial points for SUGS came from 2 wins (result unrecorded) in matches 2 and 4, which was enough to seal victory, despite the best efforts of LUGS Captain Falconer who gained his first points of the day on the last hole of his match. But as always, the result is immaterial.

For the first time, the match dinner was held in the Muirfield clubhouse, which proved a fitting end to an excellent match. Roll on 2011...

Dundee University - Gleneagles (Queens) – 11 April 2010

The Queens course had only opened at the start of the week, and the greens were consequently very bumpy having been hollow-tined, but all agreed that short sleeved golf, on what was one of the first decent spring days of 2010, was preferable to waterproofs and muffs.

Aberdeen SUGS - Royal Aberdeen - 16 May 2010

The weather gods were with us once again as Balgownie Links presented itself to us in all its glory on a wonderful spring day. In keeping with the tradition of this match, the morning pairings were announced over dinner the previous evening at the Royal Northern and Universities Club and when SUGS' lead-off pair of Gregor McIntosh and captain David Douglas showed the way with a hard fought victory over Willie Park and Niall Farquharson. The remainder of the morning's matches went in favour of the home side.
After soup, sandwiches and the substitution of Martin Todd for Hugh Harvie, the afternoon foursomes saw some high quality golf being played and all the games were won convincingly. Special mention should be made of Gregor McIntosh who won both his matches on his first appearance in this fixture and David Douglas who once again travelled all the way from Guernsey in spite of the volcanic ash cloud.

Midlothian Ladies - Gullane 2 - 4 June 2010

Another glorious evening at Gullane greeted this match - if only all SUGS fixtures were played in conditions like this! After a spell of fine weather the Gullane links were in hard and fast condition, making for testing golf. For the meterologists reading this, there was a distinct barrier on parts of the course between the cool sea air and the warmer inland air, where there was a temperature changed of ~5 degrees within the space of a few yards. However, on the day it was the ladies who proved more adept at mastering the conditions, and ably led by their captain, Tracy Laughland, ran out comfortable winners. As sole victors for SUGS, Barnet and Currie were rumoured to be considering coaching clinics for the SUGS side in advance of next year's match! The match was followed by a buffet supper in the Visitors' Clubhouse, and was as ever, a very enjoyable evening.

Oxford & Cambridge Golfing Society – Worplesdon & Sunningdale – 31 July & 1 August 2010

Although played across the border, SUGS did have the benefit of some local knowledge for this year's match amongst the team. This was especially the case at Worplesdon, where 5 of the SUGS side were members. As most of the team were London / SE based, the advance party from Scotland numbered only 4, and arrived on Friday evening to the bargain £15 / head / night accommodation in the De Vere Hotel, Sunninghill. There was time to head to a nearby hostelry before closing time to sample the local brew, on what was a balmy summer evening.

Day one of the match was played at Worplesdon GC, one of the many fine Surrey heathland courses. With the benefit of local knowledge, good weather, and several low handicappers in the side, SUGS took full advantage and went into lunch with a 4.5 - 1.5 lead, with a noteworthy(!) half point coming from Thomson & Chapman in Match 5 who were 2 down with 2 to play. The usual levels of refreshment were enjoyed during (and after) lunch, but eventually the afternoon games managed to find their way to the first tee. SUGS were not quite able to repeat the morning's performance, but still managed to win the afternoon series and end the day with an 8 - 4 advantage.

Following a quick turnaround, both sides repaired to Sunningdale Golf Club for the match dinner. Sunningdale needs no introduction, and proved a magnificient venue at the end of delightful day's summer golf. With the dress code black tie, several kilts were on display, fitting for a club that has many Scottish connections. The Society, recognising that a 4 point deficit had to be turned around the next day, suggested post dinner drinks in Windsor. Several SUGS were up the challenge, and the evening was duly spent in various clubs / bars under the Windsor railway arches (? - the Hon Sec cannot remember...!). Suffice to say that several taxis arrived back at the hotel in Sunninghill at various times between 2am and 5.30am...

Sunday dawned another fine day, and the New Course at Sunningdale provided an excellent test, with acres of bloomin' heather, SUGS were soon at home! The cobwebs were soon blown away, aided by a stop at the famous Half Way House for sausage sandwiches. Despite being the passenger in the 5.30am taxi, Gavin Greer proved that it is still possible to play good golf with 2 hours sleep and managed to maintain his 100% winning record. Alex Leslie put his local knowledge to good effect in steadying the Hon Sec's golf on the back 9 against a resurgent Adam Edwards and Tim Hanson, and the Scots duly held to win their match, and contribute towards a repeat of the Saturday morning scoreline, 4.5 - 1.5.

Lunch of the highest quality was enjoyed in the clubhouse alongside some familiar faces from the golfing world, before the afternoon matches. Despite the match being won by now, SUGS continued to press home the advantage to record a 4th series win. It would be difficult to find 2 better venues to compete for the Centenary Quaich, and it was especially pleasing that a number of younger London based SUGS were able to take part, against a Society side of similar age. Roll on 2011...

St Andrews SUGS - St Andrews (New) - 29 August 2010

The match dinner was again held in the New GC enjoyed by 11 players, including the SUGS Captain David McCleary,at which the fourball pairings were drawn in time honoured fashion. This was the 21st contest for the imfamous GUR Trophy, played over the New Course in glorious summer weather, with the holders (SUGS)aiming to win or retain the trophy for the 9th year in a row to emulate ST Andrews SUGS record in the early phase of the competition. The first three matches were very close but the SUGS Secretary playing in the last match with Keith Macintosh comfortably ran out winners to tie the match 2 - 2, enough to retain the trophy. Well done SUGS!!

Gullane GC - Gullane 1 - 5 September 2010

A fine but breezy day for this year's match, with Gullane No. 1 in excellent condition following the recently played Scottish Amateur Championship. An enjoyable lunch was taken before venturing onto the course. Past SUGS President and former Gullane GC Captain, Archie Baird, was there to see the matches off. With the addition of some new tees, and a new 8th green, the course was more testing than 12 months previously, and despite some strong SUGS pairings, the first 4 matches went the way of the host side. Fortunately Duncan and Mullins managed to restore some pride with a comfortable 4 & 3 victory, and thus avoid a SUGS whitewash. Although, as ever, the result of such matches is incidental, but it is hoped that SUGS will be able to offer a little more competition to Gullane in 2011!

Edinburgh University - Gullane No 2 - 7 November 2010

The match was played in beautiful November sunshine, over a fantistically conditioned Gullane No.2 course. In match 1, Greenshields' eighteen pars were supplemented by Belch's five birdies to give SUGS the first point. The students quickly fought back by winning game 2, birdieing the last two holes to win the game on the 18th green. A fine performance by Niven and Muckart, with both holing some lenghty putts, returned the advantage to SUGS. In match 4, the quality of golf was also high with 8 of the first 11 holes requiring birdie to either win or half, and in the end a half with a better ball of -4 was deemed a fair result. This half ensured SUGS could not lose the match, but Morton and Todd produced some excellent golf in game 5 to secure the RH Thomson Trophy for SUGS. The match result of 3.5 - 1.5 gave SUGS only their second victory in the match in the last 13 years, and also provided Captain Muckart with the perfect start to his captaincy.
