HISTORY

To mark the centenary of Scottish Universities Golfing Society, a history of the Society has been written by a member and  former Honorary Secretary of SUGS, Gordon Simmonds. Gordon is an established golf writer, having written and published a comprehensive history of the Walker Cup in 1999. He also produces a quarterly newsletter on all aspects of the game which is enjoyed by golfing enthusiasts around the world.

The society has played more than 530 matches (the results of nearly all of which are recorded) over 100 years; has a ‘spiritual home’ at Gullane and the privilege of playing annual matches and events at Muirfield, Prestwick, Portmarnock, Royal Aberdeen, Royal County Down, Royal Portrush and other great venues; its first President was Dr. William Tweddell. He was followed by Reid Jack, 1957 Amateur Champion and our current President is Archie Baird. “The Pleasure of Golf in Familiar and Congenial Company” is our heritage and legacy.

Copies of the book can be obtained from the Honorary Secretary, Tim Pakenham, who can be contacted via contact@sugs.org or by using the “Contact us” menu option to the left.
